What Is a Mini-Split System?
A ductless mini-split is a type of heat pump that heats and cools individual rooms or zones without requiring ductwork. Mini-splits have grown rapidly in popularity as both a primary heating/cooling solution and a supplement to existing central HVAC.
How Mini-Splits Work
A mini-split consists of two components: an outdoor compressor/condenser unit and one or more indoor air-handling units. These connect via a small conduit (refrigerant lines, power cable, and condensate drain) through a 3-inch hole in the wall -- no ductwork required.
Like all heat pumps, mini-splits both heat and cool. In summer, they extract heat from indoor air and move it outside. In winter, they extract heat from outdoor air and move it inside. Modern cold-climate mini-splits operate in heating mode down to -13F to -22F.
When Mini-Splits Make Sense
- Room additions: Adding a room or converting a garage that is not connected to central ductwork. A mini-split provides full heating and cooling without duct extension.
- Older homes without ductwork: Homes with boilers or baseboard heat that want to add cooling without installing a full duct system.
- Supplemental zones: Rooms that are always too hot or too cold -- a sunroom, home office, or finished basement -- where a dedicated mini-split provides precise temperature control independent of the central system.
- Primary system in mild climates: In Hawaii, coastal California, and similar mild climates, mini-splits are a cost-effective and efficient primary HVAC system.
- High-efficiency applications: Multi-zone mini-split systems can achieve very high SEER2 ratings (20-30+), making them the most efficient cooling option available in many configurations.
Mini-Split Costs
A single-zone mini-split (one outdoor unit, one indoor unit) costs $1,500-$5,000 installed. Multi-zone systems (one outdoor unit serving 2-5 indoor units) cost $4,000-$12,000+ depending on the number of zones. Premium brands (Mitsubishi, Daikin, Fujitsu) typically cost more than value brands but carry stronger reliability records.
Frequently Asked Questions
- What is a mini-split air conditioner?
- A ductless mini-split is a heat pump system with an outdoor compressor and one or more indoor air handlers connected by refrigerant lines through a small wall opening. It heats and cools individual rooms or zones without ductwork. Mini-splits are common for room additions, older homes without ducts, and supplemental zone control.
- How much does a mini-split cost to install?
- A single-zone mini-split costs $1,500-$5,000 installed, depending on capacity and brand. Multi-zone systems serving 2-5 rooms cost $4,000-$12,000+ installed. Premium brands like Mitsubishi, Daikin, and Fujitsu are on the higher end but are widely considered the most reliable.
- Do mini-splits work in cold climates?
- Modern cold-climate mini-splits (like Mitsubishi Hyper Heat or Fujitsu Halcyon) operate in heating mode down to -13F to -22F. Standard mini-splits lose significant efficiency below 35F. In very cold climates, a cold-climate rated unit is essential for reliable heating.
