AC Not Cooling? 7 Things to Check Before Calling a Technician

Before spending $75-$150 on a diagnostic call, work through these seven checks. They take less than 30 minutes and solve a surprising number of cooling complaints.

Why These Checks Matter

HVAC technicians report that roughly 20-30% of "AC not cooling" service calls turn out to be issues the homeowner could have resolved. A dirty filter, a tripped breaker, or incorrect thermostat settings do not require a professional. Working through these checks first either solves the problem for free or gives you useful information to share with the technician when you do call, which saves time and money on the diagnostic.

1. Check the Thermostat Settings

This sounds obvious, but it resolves more service calls than you would expect. Confirm the thermostat is set to COOL (not HEAT, AUTO, or FAN ONLY). Make sure the temperature setpoint is at least 5 degrees below the current room temperature. Check that a schedule or "hold" mode is not overriding your setting. If the thermostat runs on batteries, replace them -- a low battery can cause erratic behavior.

2. Check and Replace the Air Filter

A clogged air filter is the single most common cause of poor cooling performance. Locate your filter (usually in the return air grille on a wall or ceiling, or inside the air handler). Pull it out and hold it up to light. If light does not pass through, replace it immediately. A severely clogged filter restricts airflow enough to freeze the evaporator coil, which stops cooling entirely.

3. Check the Circuit Breaker

Your AC system uses two breakers -- one for the indoor air handler and one for the outdoor condenser unit. If the outdoor breaker has tripped, the fan inside will still blow air, but it will not be cooled. Find your electrical panel and locate both AC breakers. If either is in the middle position (tripped), flip it fully OFF then back ON. If it trips again immediately, do not reset it again -- that indicates an electrical fault that needs a technician.

4. Inspect the Outdoor Unit

Go outside and look at your condenser unit. Is the fan spinning? If the fan is not running but you can hear a humming sound, the capacitor may have failed. If nothing is running, the issue may be the breaker (check #3) or a failed contactor.

Check the area around the unit. The condenser needs at least 2 feet of clear space on all sides for proper airflow. Remove any debris, grass clippings, leaves, or bushes that are blocking the fins. A garden hose can gently rinse accumulated dirt from the condenser coils (spray from inside out, not outside in).

5. Check All Vents and Returns

Walk through every room and confirm supply vents are open and unblocked by furniture, rugs, or curtains. Check return air vents (the larger grilles, usually in hallways or central areas) for blockage. Closing or blocking more than 20% of your vents creates pressure imbalances that reduce cooling capacity across the whole system. Contrary to popular belief, closing vents in unused rooms does not save energy -- it makes the system work harder.

6. Look for Ice on the Refrigerant Lines

Find the copper refrigerant lines running from your outdoor unit into the house (they look like copper pipes, one thin and one thicker, wrapped in foam insulation). If there is visible ice or frost on these lines, your system has a problem -- either restricted airflow (usually the filter) or low refrigerant.

If you see ice: turn the system OFF and set the fan to ON (not AUTO). This circulates warm air across the coil to defrost it. Wait 2-4 hours until all ice has melted. 7. Check the Drain Line

Your AC produces condensation that drains through a PVC pipe, usually to the outside of your home or to a floor drain. If this drain line is clogged, some systems have a safety float switch that shuts down the system to prevent water damage. Look for the drain line exit outside your home -- if water is not dripping during operation, the line may be clogged. You can clear minor clogs by pouring a cup of distilled white vinegar into the drain line access point (usually near the indoor unit).

When None of These Solve the Problem

If you have worked through all seven checks and your AC is still not cooling properly, the problem is internal to the system and requires professional diagnosis. Common causes that need a technician:

  • Low refrigerant: From a leak in the system. Cost: $200-$600 for a recharge plus leak repair.
  • Failed capacitor: The compressor cannot start. Cost: $150-$350 for replacement.
  • Dirty evaporator coil: Reduces heat absorption. Cost: $100-$400 for professional cleaning.
  • Failed compressor: The most expensive repair. Cost: $800-$2,500. On older systems, replacement may make more sense.
