SEER and SEER2 — Air Conditioning Efficiency

SEER (Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio) measures how efficiently an AC system cools over an entire season. Higher is better. A 16 SEER system uses less electricity than a 14 SEER system to produce the same amount of cooling.

SEER2 is the updated standard (effective 2023) that uses a slightly different testing methodology — SEER2 ratings are approximately 4.5% lower than SEER for the same equipment. Both measure the same underlying efficiency; the measurement method changed.

  • 14-15 SEER: Minimum efficiency tier. Adequate for moderate climates with short cooling seasons.
  • 16-18 SEER: Mid-efficiency. Good balance of upfront cost and operating savings. Most popular replacement tier.
  • 20-25 SEER: High-efficiency. Best for hot climates with long cooling seasons where the system runs heavily.

AFUE — Furnace and Boiler Efficiency

AFUE (Annual Fuel Utilization Efficiency) measures how much of the fuel burned by a furnace or boiler is converted to heat vs. lost through exhaust. An 80% AFUE furnace converts 80 cents of every dollar of gas to heat; 20 cents goes up the flue.

  • 80% AFUE: Minimum efficiency standard in most regions. Non-condensing furnace. Less expensive upfront but higher operating cost.
  • 90-92% AFUE: Entry-level condensing furnace. Requires a condensate drain but recaptures some exhaust heat.
  • 95-98% AFUE: High-efficiency condensing furnace. Best operating cost. Highest upfront cost. Best choice in climates with long, cold heating seasons.

HSPF — Heat Pump Heating Efficiency

HSPF (Heating Seasonal Performance Factor) measures heat pump heating efficiency specifically. Higher is more efficient. The federal minimum is 8.2 HSPF (7.5 HSPF2 under the updated standard). Good systems run 9-10+ HSPF. Like SEER, real-world performance depends on installation and conditions.

Efficiency ratings describe a ceiling, not a guarantee. These factors affect real-world performance as much as the rating:

  • Proper equipment sizing for your home's load
  • Duct condition — leaky ducts lose 20-30% of conditioned air before it reaches living spaces
  • Installation quality — refrigerant charge, airflow, electrical connections
  • Maintenance — dirty coils and filters reduce efficiency toward the low end of rated performance
